Geothermal
Geothermal technologies use the fixed temperature of water and circulate it throughout buildings and homes. The water then passively heats or cools the building and helps keep temperatures steady and comfortable. Geothermal technology can also be used in power plants to provide energy to the grid. According to the Geothermal Energy Association’s most recent industry census (2008), the geothermal industry employed an estimated 11,000 people ranging from drillers to geologists and engineers product developers. The U.S. currently leads the world in installed geothermal capacity. While geothermal power plants in the US are mainly in the West, heat pump technologies are useful in New York and the Northeast.
